Capturing Angie’s Unique Fashion Style

While I love shooting families and pets, there’s something particularly fun about shooting for the sole purpose of showing off fashion and style. After all, there aren’t too many fashion bloggers in this part of Iowa, so when Angie contacted me looking for some shots to use for her lifestyle blog, I knew it was time to come up with some beautiful places in Cedar Falls, IA for photography to highlight her stylistic choices.

As an added bonus, Angie doesn’t often visit the Cedar Falls area – and what better place to take a tourist than the Cedar Falls Downtown area? That’s exactly what we did. Not only did I find some fantastic places to showcase some of her favorite outfits, but I also managed to introduce her to Scratch Cupcakery. (She’s a convert now!) The staff at Scratch Cupcakery was even nice enough to allow us to take a few shots of her first visit.

Check out some of these beautiful shots of Angie – and visit her lifestyle blog, Artista Angie, while you’re at it!

Meet Oreo – the Baby Pet Skunk!

Yes, a pet skunk. And yes, he’s entirely adorable. While I love being a pet photographer in Cedar Falls, it’s not often that I get to photograph a baby skunk – and I loved every second of it. Did you know that Iowa is one of the few states where you can legally keep a skunk as a pet?

While the first imagine most people have about a skunk includes the “smell” that these cute little guys are known for, domesticated skunks have the scent gland removed. Since the pet will be kept inside and away from predators, the need for their scented defense system isn’t necessary. (Though, similar to declawing cats, there’s still argument whether this is a good practice.)

Skunks also require a relatively strict diet as pets. Unlike many other domesticated pets which can be fed the same food, day-to-day, skunks thrive under a varied diet including lean protein, vegetables, and some fruits. Pet skunks will have issues digesting processed foods.

However, all of these “downsides” aren’t enough to detract from a skunk’s playful personality. These pets are known to be loyal, extremely curious, loving, and playful.

Plus, they’re just downright adorable. Look at this baby skunk as he finds a new family!

Encourage Reading: 2017 Denver, IA Dr. Seuss Celebration

Who doesn’t love the energy of an event put on for families and children¬†– especially one designed to foster the love of reading and celebrate the life of Dr. Seuss? I had the honor of photographing the Denver, Iowa Public Library‘s annual Dr. Seuss celebration – both the celebration itself as well as the dedicated photobooth that had been set up.

You should have seen all of the kid-friendly activities here! I’m not even sure how I would have managed to make it through all of the activities if I’d tried. The event was even larger than last year!

Kids seemed to love all of the options, though, and all of the activities were based upon Dr. Seuss and his famous book characters. Families could enjoy Dr. Seuss bingo, Dr. Seuss Tic-Tac-Toe, multiple craft areas, cake and “green eggs and ham” for snacks, sit down and watch a Dr. Seuss movie in the movie area, enjoy some “Hop On Pop” popcorn with an old-fashioned popcorn maker, and even meet Thing 1 and the Cat in the Hat! All of the kids there were clearly having a great time.

Just check out some of the shots from this literary event:

Welcoming Little Puppy Kali to Her New Family!

Baby animals will always hold a special place in my heart – especially the bond between a new baby pet and its new home and family. This little white pupple, Kali, was recently welcomed into a new home with her own sibling to love: the little puppy Kilo that I photographed last year!

Kali is an absolute dream puppy to visit – though she’s apparently a bit of a handful! While she’s a sweet little girl, her owners say she’s also a bit of a biter, and they’ve taken to hiding some of her favorite things to chew (including rugs). To guests, however, Kali is a complete sweetheart. She wags her tail when you address her, loves to be bet and play with her plentiful toys, and is the stereotypical hyperactive (but loveable) puppy.

With all of that being said, enjoy these adorable puppy photos of the first moments of Kali’s life in her new home along with her big brother, Kilo. She’s such a cutie!

Looking Back at the Summer’s Farmer’s Markets

With¬†temperatures dipping into the frigid digits, I thought it’d be time to showcase some of my favorite images from one of my favorite summer activities. I have to take the memories of the warm, happy season where I can get them, right?

One of my favorite things to do in new cities is explore their Farmer’s Markets. Not only does it give me a chance to see the city on a more micro scale, but I get the chance to support some of the smaller businesses in the area, usually pick up some coffee from the smaller cafes in town, and learn more about the community itself. When shopping at my local markets, it gives me a way to learn more about some of the healthy living initiatives the community is doing, and, of course, I can get produce straight from local farmers. Plus, for whatever reason, most markets now have a cupcake vendor – and it’s hard to turn down a delicious cupcake on after a relaxed walk through the markets.

Even if you’re not much for the markets, you have to admit that the atmosphere and lovely colors can take you straight back to the nice, relaxing weekend days of summer!
