Meet Oreo – the Baby Pet Skunk!

Yes, a pet skunk. And yes, he’s entirely adorable. While I love being a pet photographer in Cedar Falls, it’s not often that I get to photograph a baby skunk – and I loved every second of it. Did you know that Iowa is one of the few states where you can legally keep a skunk as a pet?

While the first imagine most people have about a skunk includes the “smell” that these cute little guys are known for, domesticated skunks have the scent gland removed. Since the pet will be kept inside and away from predators, the need for their scented defense system isn’t necessary. (Though, similar to declawing cats, there’s still argument whether this is a good practice.)

Skunks also require a relatively strict diet as pets. Unlike many other domesticated pets which can be fed the same food, day-to-day, skunks thrive under a varied diet including lean protein, vegetables, and some fruits. Pet skunks will have issues digesting processed foods.

However, all of these “downsides” aren’t enough to detract from a skunk’s playful personality. These pets are known to be loyal, extremely curious, loving, and playful.

Plus, they’re just downright adorable. Look at this baby skunk as he finds a new family!

Encourage Reading: 2017 Denver, IA Dr. Seuss Celebration

Who doesn’t love the energy of an event put on for families and childrenĀ – especially one designed to foster the love of reading and celebrate the life of Dr. Seuss? I had the honor of photographing the Denver, Iowa Public Library‘s annual Dr. Seuss celebration – both the celebration itself as well as the dedicated photobooth that had been set up.

You should have seen all of the kid-friendly activities here! I’m not even sure how I would have managed to make it through all of the activities if I’d tried. The event was even larger than last year!

Kids seemed to love all of the options, though, and all of the activities were based upon Dr. Seuss and his famous book characters. Families could enjoy Dr. Seuss bingo, Dr. Seuss Tic-Tac-Toe, multiple craft areas, cake and “green eggs and ham” for snacks, sit down and watch a Dr. Seuss movie in the movie area, enjoy some “Hop On Pop” popcorn with an old-fashioned popcorn maker, and even meet Thing 1 and the Cat in the Hat! All of the kids there were clearly having a great time.

Just check out some of the shots from this literary event:

Welcoming Little Puppy Kali to Her New Family!

Baby animals will always hold a special place in my heart – especially the bond between a new baby pet and its new home and family. This little white pupple, Kali, was recently welcomed into a new home with her own sibling to love: the little puppy Kilo that I photographed last year!

Kali is an absolute dream puppy to visit – though she’s apparently a bit of a handful! While she’s a sweet little girl, her owners say she’s also a bit of a biter, and they’ve taken to hiding some of her favorite things to chew (including rugs). To guests, however, Kali is a complete sweetheart. She wags her tail when you address her, loves to be bet and play with her plentiful toys, and is the stereotypical hyperactive (but loveable) puppy.

With all of that being said, enjoy these adorable puppy photos of the first moments of Kali’s life in her new home along with her big brother, Kilo. She’s such a cutie!

Capturing Amy and Ben’s Playful Family

I’ve been spending so much time on client’s country homes – and it’s making me jealous! Much like other clients I’ve had recently, Amy and Ben live on a gorgeous, sprawling country property that fully envisions everything that’s amazing about Iowa beauty. With large, sprawling cornfields nearby, lovely barns and other buildings as backdrops, and of course, lots of beautiful greenery and trees, Amy and Ben’s home looks like a picture-perfect property.

And of course, this gorgeous property made a perfect backdrop for their playful Iowa family photos. Their son has tons of abounding energy, and he wants to play just as much as he wants to take photos. His playful attitude translated great for photos too – he was up for some anything I asked him to do – and isn’t that the best way to get family photos? Having photos that shows the boundless energy of your family while they’re still young?

Enjoy some of my favorite photos from their session:

Amazing Autumn Portraits with Nina!

One of my favorite things about photographing portraits is getting to photograph and interact with so many different people. It’s always a lovely surprise to see how people react to a camera. When photographing Nina on a lovely autumn morning, I wasn’t expecting the lovely “serious” look she can pull off! While I’d regularly have to remind her to smile for me, she has this intense and serious look that lends itself so well to any type of high-end, fashion photography – and she just seems to do it so naturally!

Like other Cedar Falls photography sessions I’ve been enamored with this fall, I asked Nina to bring something that represeted one of her hobbies. Her guitar was the perfect addition to her shoot, and it brought out more of her playful side. While she’s still learning to play, she clearly looks fantastic while doing it – I know she’s going to be a natural!

Check out some of my favorite shots from Nina’s lovely photoshoot:
