Another Winner at the Dr. E.H. Stumme Art Show

While I love shooting clients professionally, I tend to spend a lot of my free time still hidden behind a camera as I capture wildlife, events, and other parts of my life through the lens. While I feel a certain amount of happiness and fulfillment from showcasing exactly how beautiful someone can be, it’s always fun to grow my skills in other areas of photography – whether that be landscape, animal, events, businesses, or more. There’s a lot here to keep a Cedar Falls, IA photographer busy!

Once in awhile, I get the chance to submit some of my photo projects to various competitions. The Denver, IA library was having an art show, and I took the time to mount and frame two of my favorite photos from the last year – and enter them into the “professional” category. Not only was it great to support the library’s support of the arts, but it was fantastic to see my shots hanging up next to other’s photos!

The enjoyment didn’t end there. During the artist’s reception, I was quickly led over to one of my prints – which had won 1st place in the “Professional Photography” category.

A Year Full of Airplanes

The time has come around this year, again, for Iowa DOT’s annual aviation photography competition. Like previous years, I’ve culled out some of my favorite airplane-themed photos for submission in the competition. It’s a hard decision, and narrowing down some of my favorites is difficult to do from the hundreds of aviation photos I’ve captured throughout the year.

Plus, there are just so many different aspects of aviation that can be captured on film! The Iowa DOT offers different categories to make it easier to judge and categorize them, but narrowing down which shots I want to submit is a bit like trying to pick a favorite food; it’s just hard to do! There’s something about the magic of a child’s eyes when he/she gets near airplanes, and there’s something about the structural beauty and design of the metalwork of an airplane. Capturing a student’s perseverance and dedication to earning a Pilot’s License is beautiful while airshows and gatherings of fly-in pilots capture another aspect of the aviation community.

That being said, here are some of my favorite aviation shots that I submitted to the 2017 Iowa DOT Aviation Photography Competition.

Another Fashion Adventure with Angie

You might remember Angie from my last post – and of course, you would. She’s a natural in front of the camera, and she’s just as friendly and outgoing as the photos make her appear. With such a natural in front of the camera, it’s no surprise that there are more photos of her extroverted self. She and I had a blast capturing some of the beautiful outfits she put together.

While I took her to downtown Cedar Falls to capture these shots, I was amazed by how friendly and accommodating the businesses were for a Cedar Falls, IA photographer. The staff at Cup of Joe was more-than-happy to allow us to capture a few shots of Angie’s delicious latte – and after the shots were done, Angie and I had a fantastic time talking about web design and social media. She’s an ambitious, beautiful woman, and I think she’s going to go far with her innate perseverance.

I feel like these shots capture Angie’s personality so perfectly – plus, check out her lifestyle blog, Artista Angie, while you’re here.

Capturing Angie’s Unique Fashion Style

While I love shooting families and pets, there’s something particularly fun about shooting for the sole purpose of showing off fashion and style. After all, there aren’t too many fashion bloggers in this part of Iowa, so when Angie contacted me looking for some shots to use for her lifestyle blog, I knew it was time to come up with some beautiful places in Cedar Falls, IA for photography to highlight her stylistic choices.

As an added bonus, Angie doesn’t often visit the Cedar Falls area – and what better place to take a tourist than the Cedar Falls Downtown area? That’s exactly what we did. Not only did I find some fantastic places to showcase some of her favorite outfits, but I also managed to introduce her to Scratch Cupcakery. (She’s a convert now!) The staff at Scratch Cupcakery was even nice enough to allow us to take a few shots of her first visit.

Check out some of these beautiful shots of Angie – and visit her lifestyle blog, Artista Angie, while you’re at it!

Meet Oreo – the Baby Pet Skunk!

Yes, a pet skunk. And yes, he’s entirely adorable. While I love being a pet photographer in Cedar Falls, it’s not often that I get to photograph a baby skunk – and I loved every second of it. Did you know that Iowa is one of the few states where you can legally keep a skunk as a pet?

While the first imagine most people have about a skunk includes the “smell” that these cute little guys are known for, domesticated skunks have the scent gland removed. Since the pet will be kept inside and away from predators, the need for their scented defense system isn’t necessary. (Though, similar to declawing cats, there’s still argument whether this is a good practice.)

Skunks also require a relatively strict diet as pets. Unlike many other domesticated pets which can be fed the same food, day-to-day, skunks thrive under a varied diet including lean protein, vegetables, and some fruits. Pet skunks will have issues digesting processed foods.

However, all of these “downsides” aren’t enough to detract from a skunk’s playful personality. These pets are known to be loyal, extremely curious, loving, and playful.

Plus, they’re just downright adorable. Look at this baby skunk as he finds a new family!
